Page 1: Introduction

The Health Sciences Doctoral Training Centre provides support for doctoral research students in the Health Faculties at King’s College London to undertake training in a method, technique or application to advance their doctoral research project.

Examples of funded activities

  • Secondment to a lab to train in the use of a piece of equipment or technique or to gather data.
  • Attendance at an external advanced training course in a method that will be applied to your project.
  • Attendance to a Winter or Summer School with a clear training and development benefit.

How to apply

All current doctoral research (PhD, MD(Res), MRes, DClinPsy, etc.) students in the Health Faculties at King's College London are eligible to apply for these bursaries.

  1. We accept applications at any time throughout the year, with a final deadline for 2023-24 of Friday 05 July 2024 at 17:00 BST.
  2. Your doctoral supervisor must also email hs-dtc@kcl.ac.uk confirming their support for your application before we can process your application (200 words max).

Terms and Conditions

  • Individual HSDTC Advanced Training Fund awards are for a minimum of £30 and a maximum of £300 each; furthermore, each doctoral research student can be awarded a maximum of £300 from the HSDTC Advanced Training Fund during their doctorate at King's. So, you can apply multiple times but you can receive a maximum of £300 in total from the fund.
  • You should demonstrate in your application how your proposed activity will support and/or advance your doctoral research project, and why you need the support of funds from the HSDTC.
  • Retrospective funding applications will not be considered.
  • Funds cannot be used for conference expenses or for field work; please consider applying for the Centre for Doctoral Studies Conference Fund for conference expenses.
  • If funding is to be used for training that is subject to ethical approval (e.g. animal work; patient data) you will be contacted for verification that the appropriate ethical approvals and/or licences are in place.
  • Your doctoral supervisor’s support is required for this application.
  • Activity reports will be requested by the HSDTC for successful awards.
  • Awards will be made to ensure maximum diversity of represented faculties, schools, departments and research groups, in that order.
